Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951) is the 2nd book of The Chronicles of Narnia series by C. S. Lewis. There are totally 7 books in the series and they are considered a classic in children’s literature. Along with the Harry Potter series (which also consists of 7 books) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia are a highly popular piece of fantasy fiction. It has been in continuous publication since 1954. It influenced authors like J. K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter series) and, perhaps, J. R. R. Tolkien (author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy). Lewis was awarded the Carnegie Medal, one of the highest marks of excellence in children’s literature, for The Last Battle (1956), the last title of the series.
In Prince Caspian, the Pevensie children—Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy—make a second trip to Narnia and have wonderful adventures there. The narrative is gripping from the beginning to the end of the book. As a reader, you will feel like you have been transported to a world of magic where lions, badgers and squirrels talk, trees walk and dance, and everything seems to come to life. Even the moon and stars in Narnia land are bigger, brighter, more beautiful, and can predict your fate accurately. In Narnia, the Pevensie children get the opportunity to play more adult-like roles and yet, they retain their child-like innocence. This seems to be the message of the book—don’t lose touch of the child within you. Narnia is something of a fictional parallel universe. It is like our world except that there is magic in it. The Pevensie children travel from their ordinary world to the Narnian world, and back again to their world. There is the usual good vs. evil battle in the story, an element that is common to many epical tales.
. The original illustrator of the Narnia series was Pauline Baynes, and her illustrations are there even in the reprinted versions of the books.
Two stories of the Narnia series—The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) and Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia—have been adapted into films. The recent editions of both these books have coloured pictures of the stills of their movies.
