Born at Solapur in Maharashtra on 28th March, 1926
Six-foot tall and powerfully built, 'Polly Kaka' as he is popularly known was a right-handed batsman from the top drawer. He played 59 tests, scoring 3631 runs at an average of 42.22, with 12 hundreds and 223 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1955 as his highest. He also bowled useful medium-pace and claimed 35 wickets at an average of 42.08.
Though Umrigar led India in tests during the late 'fifties and scored two innings wins against the Kiwis, he was happiest playing as a middle order bastion for India. At Old Trafford, in 1959, while Abbas Ali Baig scored his debut hundred against England, Umrigar scored 118 with 13 boundaries.
Served Indian cricket in various capacities after his retirement.
