Recycling Aluminium

Why do we recycle aluminium?

Aluminium is never found in the free (uncombined) state in nature. It is always chemically combined with other elements. The ore called bauxite is our chief source of the metal. But an enormous amount of electricity is required to obtain the metal from this ore. To conserve energy, aluminium manufacturers try to obtain as much aluminium as they can by recycling used aluminium containers and other scrap. Re-smelting scrap to produce aluminium requires only about 5% of the energy required to make the metal from bauxite.
So it makes good sense to recycle aluminium. Not only do we save energy, we also conserve our reserves of bauxite.
