Here is an interesting story for the teacher to narrate and help students perform calculations with respect to addition and subtraction of time, mentally. This activity can be given after the topic on “Time” and “Addition & Subtraction of units of time” have been completed.

Objectives:  
To help the students to

i) develop the skill of attentive listening.
ii) calculate mentally the number of minutes between any two given ‘times’.

 Instructions to teachers: 
Read the story in an interesting way in order to get the students’ attention. Wherever there is a blank, pause and ask appropriate questions like

1.When did Ram finish his breakfast?
2.How much time did he take to eat?
3.At what time did his friends join him? 4.At what time did the official blow his whistle? etc.

There is a running race competition in Ram’s School. Ram’s big day is about to begin. He rises at 5:30 a.m. and does 15 minutes of stretching exercises. The clock now shows ----------. After breakfast, Ram looks at the clock. It is 6.15 a.m. He wonders why he spent ----------- minutes to eat! Quickly, he leaves home. After a 20 minute walk, he checks his watch. It is -------------. Then, a few of his friends join him. In 25 minutes, the race is to begin. The time is 7.00 a.m. The competitors line up. Five minutes later, at ---------, the official blows his whistle. The race is on. Ram starts out slowly. He runs for 25 minutes and looks at his watch. It is ----------. He knows he must run faster in order to win. He gradually gains speed. In about 10 minutes, he passes 8 runners. It is now ------------ . He has 5 km more to go and is in 4th place. He now tries his best and in the next 10 minutes, moves up to 2nd place. It is now ------------.  As he approaches the finish line, he runs faster and faster. 15 more minutes have gone by and the clock reads --------- in the ending moments of the race. Finally, Ram beats the boy who is in the lead position and crosses the finish line to win the race. He breaks the earlier record by completing the race in ---------- minutes or ----------- hour.
